Multi-column Section

The Special Collections Research Center's holdings of rare books, manuscripts, artifacts, University archives and audio recordings are searchable in a variety of ways:

Search the Catalog

To perform a general search of catalogued items and manuscript collections maintained by SCRC, you can use the search bar located at the top of our web page.

This basic search will automatically refine the result to both catalogued volumes and original manuscript collections currently maintained in SCRC. You can further refine your search results in the left menu by the type of materials (archival manuscript materials, books, journals, etc.), subjects, and disciplines.

Refined Search for Catalogued Items

To perform advanced searches for cataloged items, including books, journals, broadsides, etc., you can use the Classic Catalog

Here, you can limit your search to special collections, and refine the parameters of your search in numerous ways, including by date, subject, format, author, media, and more.

Refined Search for Manuscript Material

You can search our manuscript collections through their finding aids.

Finding aids are detailed inventories and descriptions of the contents of archival collections. Finding aids can help you locate photographs, correspondence, artwork, memorabilia, and other unpublished material found within SCRC's archival collections.

To search our finding aids, visit Special Collections Finding Aids

Search Digital Collections

SCRC Online contains digital reproductions of thousands of items from our collections. Materials represented include photographs, correspondence, artwork, memorabilia, rare books and printed works, as well as audio and moving image. You can narrow your search to specific collections, such as the William Safire Papers, the Ronald G. Becker Collection of Charles Eisenmann Photographs, or the Gerrit Smith Broadsides and Pamphlets, or search through all of our digital reproductions which include a growing amount of material compiled from researcher requests, publications, and exhibitions.

In addition, SCRC has several specialized portals that provide more sophisticated access to specific subsets of our digital holdings. These include the Belfer Cylinders Digital Connection, the Marcel Breuer Digital Archive, the Plastics Collection, and many others.  For a complete list of these specialized portals, visit our Digital Collections page.

Collections Retrieval

SCRC staff will assist researchers in retrieving the material they need for research. To request materials for your visit, please contact us with your materials request using our correspondence form or stop by our Reading Room desk.

Please note that most collections are housed off-site and require advanced notice to retrieve.
