After spending fourteen years at the Denver Post, Iowa-born Paul Conrad became the chief political cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times from 1964 to 1993. In more than five decades of editorial cartooning, Conrad was the recipient of numerous professional accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1964, 1971, and 1984. In a compilation of his work, Drawing the Line, Conrad observed that "I never stop being amazed by the fact that no matter how wild or fantastic a cartoon I draw might seem at the time, it's always eventually overtaken by events that prove to be even more wild or fantastic than I could ever imagine." Over the course of the 1960s, Conrad donated more than one thousand original cartoons to the Special Collections Research Center.
