Historical Note

The Women of the University Community was an organization at Syracuse University for members of the faculty or administrative staff at Syracuse University, as well as the wives of faculty or administrative staff. The original name of the organization was the Syracuse University Women’s Club, and it was established in 1927 by Clara Flint, wife of Chancellor Charles W. Flint. In 1997, the organization was renamed to Women of the University Community and remained active until its disbandment in 2021. Throughout the years the club actively held many social events, including book sales, concerts, symposiums, teas, parties, tours, and regular meetings of club members. In addition to supporting the wider Syracuse community through charity works, the club was also interested in providing support for women and education. Starting in 1969, the club established the Mildred Eggers Award and Ruth Tolley Award scholarships for women attending Syracuse University, and the Beverly Whaley Award for women attending State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Scope and Content Note

The Women of the University Community Records documents the activities of the Syracuse University Women’s Club, later renamed the Women of the University Community. This collection is divided into two series and dated from 1930 to 2022.

The first series, Syracuse University Women's Club, consists of materials dated 1930 to 1997. Much of the material in this series is concerned with the running of the organization, with particular focus on the meetings and administrative records, as well as the files of former presidents of the organization. Types of materials in the series include meeting minutes, agendas, event information, correspondence, publications, notes, reports, schedules, and membership rosters.

The second series, Women of the University Community, consists of materials dated 1997 to 2022. Much of the material in this series focuses on planning and running of events held by the organization, as well as information and correspondence related to the scholarships they established. Types of materials in the series include event invitations, event planning information, printed out email correspondence, reports, schedules, publications, notes, and photographs.
