Biography

Matthew Wayner was born on September 7, 1927 in Clifton, New Jersey. He received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1949, his master’s degree from Tufts College in 1950 and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1953. After receiving his Ph.D., Wayner started teaching psychology at Syracuse University and earned his tenure in 1960. During his time at Syracuse University, he was a visiting professor at Florida State University, Arizona State University, and universities abroad. Throughout his professional career, Wayner wrote many articles from his collected research and data regarding thirst, alcohol, and water consumption. As a professor, he received many grants and gave numerous lectures.

Wayner was not only a professor but was also an editor and served on editorial teams of publications like Physiology & Behavior, Brain Research Bulletin, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, and Substance and Alcohol Misuse. In addition, he was the editor of Thirst: Proceedings of the First International Symposium on Thirst in the Regulation of Body Water Held at the Florida State University in Tallahassee, May 1963, which was the book from conference that he organized. Wayner served as a chair for this and several other conferences as well.

At the time of his resignation in 1982 from Syracuse University, Wayner was the director of the Brain Research Laboratory and director of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in Biopsychology. He accepted a position at the University of Texas, San Antonio and ten years later became the first president of International Behavioral Neuroscience Society.


Scope and Content Note

The Matthew J. Wayner Papers contain the correspondence, conference and research files from Wayner's professional career. The collection is split into five series:

The Conference Files Series contains the papers from conferences Wayner attended as well as correspondence related to those conferences.

The Correspondence Series consists of letters sent by and received from Wayner in regards to his professional career and time at Syracuse University.

The Publications Series includes the written work of Wayner as well as annotated published reports and articles he collected.

The Research Files and Drafts Series is composed of laboratory work Wayner completed and collected as well as the drafts to articles based on his research.

The Symposium on Thirst Files Series contains items related to the conference First International Symposium on Thirst in the Regulation of Body Water, as well as items related to the book that was published afterward. Materials are divided into subseries including Book Drafts, containing drafts of articles and speeches presented at the conference; Conference Files that are materials directly relating to the conference, including the audio reels taken during the event; and Correspondence that is mostly about the book afterward and is between Wayner and the authors.

Access Restrictions:

Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.

Equipment is not available for researchers to listen to the audiotapes in the Reading Room.

Written permission must be obtained from the Syracuse University Archives and all relevant rights holders before publishing quotations, excerpts or images from any materials in this collection.

The Matthew J. Wayner Papers were donated to the Archives by Dr. Wayner and Russell Peterson in October of 1967.

Processing Information

The Matthew J. Wayner Papers were placed in archival folders and boxes and in many cases left in original order within the folder.
