Biography

Kashi Wali (1925-2021) was an American linguist in the field of Indo-Aryan languages and a Syracuse University alumna, adjunct professor, and research affiliate. Wali was born in Ujjain, India and received a Master of Sciences in physics at Banaras Hindu University in 1952. After moving to the United States in the late 1950s to join her husband, Wali earned her Master of Arts in linguistics from the University of Chicago in 1969. She went on to receive her PhD from Syracuse University in 1975 and became an adjunct associate professor shortly after in 1976. Wali continued her professional research on Kashmiri and Marathi linguistics as an adjunct professor and research affiliate at Cornell and Syracuse Universities. She was the recipient of multiple Syracuse University grants to pursue her research and published over twenty papers and seven books on Kashmiri, Marathi, and South Asian linguistics, both individually and with long-time collaborators. Wali was a notable scholar in her field and her most influential work was Kashmiri: a cognitive-descriptive grammar.

Scope and Content Note

The Kashi Wali Papers comprise papers, research notes, books, and correspondence related to Wali's work as a linguist in the field of Indo-Aryan languages. Please note that there is overlap in the scope of the series due to the interwoven nature of Wali's work and attempts to preserve the original order of the papers as much as possible. A notable example is that files on both Kashmiri and Marathi appear in the South Asian linguistics series rather than either individual language series.

The Correspondence subject files series contains curricula vitae and several types of correspondence including with colleagues and publishers. Additionally, it contains academic and professional materials from Wali's affiliated universities.

The General linguistics series contains papers related to Wali's research in linguistics other than her specialized research areas. This series includes research in the general field of linguistics, on languages outside the Indo-Aryan language family, and coursework from her graduate programs in the United States that formed the foundation of Wali's formal introduction to linguistics.

The Kashmiri series is composed of documents related to the first of Wali's two major language focuses. Within this series are extensive research data and notes, drafts and publishing correspondence related to her Kashmiri books and papers, and correspondence related to her work in the Kashmiri language. The series also contains copies of two of Wali's books Modern Kashmiri grammar and Kashmiri: a cognitive-descriptive grammar.

Within the Marathi series are numerous research notes and data, drafts of some of her published papers and books, and correspondence related to her research in the field and publication of her findings. The series contains copies of three of Wali's books, Marathi syntax: a study of reflexives, Marathi: a study in comparative South Asian languages, and Marathi. The series also contains multiple references to a separate book called Marathi, cowritten with Ramesh Dhongde.

The South Asian linguistics series comprises research on South Asian languages, correspondence with colleagues in the Indo-Aryan linguistics field, and files that cover Kashmiri and Marathi together.

Computer media in the collection, including floppy disks, compact discs, and USB drives, remain unprocessed and are therefore unavailable to researchers.
