Historical Note

The Syracuse University Varsity Club was founded in 1934 by alumnus George Bond, a football player from the class of 1894. Its purpose is to unite the University's letter winning alumni and promote the University's athletics program. The club states that it is an "opportunity to foster and maintain relationships across different sports, generations, and geographical locations." Membership dues, which cover both a membership fee and a small donation to a University sports team of the donor's choice, allow the Varsity Club to offer small scholarships to current University athletes and host large events like its LetterWinners of Distinction ceremony and dinner. Athletes nearing graduation are encouraged by the club to join so as to continue to support their program for years to come.

The LetterWinners of Distinction title is the highest honor given by the Syracuse University Athletics Department. Recipients of this honor must have graduated at least twenty years ago, earned at least one varsity letter, and brought honor and distinction to their sport, profession, and community. The LetterWinners of Distinction program was first devised in 1964 and the first recipients were Dr. Gordon D. Hoople '15 G'19 (crew), Lewis P. Andreas '21 G'37 (football and baseball), Arnold M. Grant '27 G'29 (swimming, water polo, and football), Victor A. Hanson '27 (football, basketball, and baseball), Earle J. Machold '27 (baseball manager), and John T. Connor '36 (football manager). The first woman to receive the award was Martha Mogish, a basketball player from the class of 1982, in 2001.
