Biography

John Tyo (1917 - ) was a professor of film and supervisor of motion picture production at Syracuse University. Tyo was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an electronics technician during World War II. He became a United States citizen in 1955. Tyo attended the Cornish School of Fine Arts in Seattle, Washington, earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Washington, and completed his Ph.D. in education at Indiana University in 1961. Before joining the faculty of Syracuse University, Tyo taught at Pennsylvania State, the University of California, Indiana University, the University of Puerto Rico, and at several other institutions around the world. He was hired as the supervisor of motion picture production at Syracuse University in 1965, following his work with the RAND Corporation in California and the success of his award-winning educational and informational films, including Stars and Stripes on Display, How to Make a French Omelette, and The Legislative Process. Tyo's last project before beginning work at the University was an educational film commissioned by the government of Nigeria. Tyo retired from Syracuse University in 1983, at which time he was granted Emeritus status.


Scope and Content Note

The John Tyo Papers have been divided into the following series:

Audiovisual materials comprises 43 reels of film produced by John Tyo, including Foreign Powers in the Persian Gulf: The Never-Ending Visit, produced by Tyo Productions, Inc., and Sugarplum, created for Syracuse University.

Production Files includes filming schedules, research files, scripts, still negatives and visuals, and the Tyo Productions, Inc. agreement for Foreign Powers in the Persian Gulf: The Never-Ending Visit.


Restrictions

Access Restrictions:

Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus. Some items in this collection have been identified as possible nitrate films, and have been placed in frozen storage. These items are restricted.

Access to recordings requires advance notice to produce a use copy.

Use Restrictions:

Written permission must be obtained from the Syracuse University Archives and all relevant rights holders before publishing quotations, excerpts or images from any materials in this collection.

Acquisition Information

Dr. Farhad Saba donated the John Tyo Papers to the Syracuse University Archives in two accessions in 2016 and 2017.

Processing Information

Paper-based materials were rehoused in acid-free folders and boxes. Film reels not identified as possible nitrates were re-wound and placed in archival plastic cases. Nitrate films were placed in frozen storage.

Productions files are arranged in alphabetical order by title, film reels are arranged in alphabetical order by production title.
