Biography

Charles Thomsen (1858-1942) and Lydia Thomsen (1861-1924) were siblings who attended Syracuse University from 1879 to 1883.

While a student at Syracuse University, Charles Thomsen was an editor for the Herald Association, treasurer of the Euterpe Society, and director of the Glee Club. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in music in 1883. After graduating, Charles became the musical director and music instructor at the Centenary Collegiate Institute in Hackettstown, New Jersey.

Lydia Thomsen was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority while a student at Syracuse University. Lydia also graduated in 1883, but with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. After graduation, she worked for a short time as a private tutor in Syracuse, New York. In 1886, she moved to Hartford, Connecticut to become a high school teacher.

Scope and Content Note

The Thomsen Family Diplomas consists of both Charles Thomsen and Lydia Thomsen's diplomas from Syracuse University. They were both awarded on June 27, 1883. Charles' diploma still has its original blue and pink ribbons attached. His diploma is in English and Lydia's is in Latin.
