Historical Note

Student publications have been a facet of Syracuse University since its early days. The Syracuse Herald was the first newspaper published by Syracuse University students, with its first issue published in 1872. Several weekly and biweekly publications followed in the first twenty years after the founding of the University, including The Syracusan, The University News, The University Forum, and Syracuse University Weekly. During the 1960s and 1970s, students published several newspapers dedicated to the counterculture movement. Today, Syracuse University students continue to publish dozens of newspapers, magazines, and newsletters.

Scope and Content Note

The Syracuse University Student Publications Reference Collection contains publications from 1872 to the present, covering a range of topics, including politics, religion, popular culture, social issues, and campus news. Work by Syracuse University students who would become professional writers and illustrators is featured in the collection. For example, illustrations by sports illustrator Lon Keller are on the cover of several issues of the Orange Peel. Work by cartoonist Vaughn Bodé is also included in the collection, featured in satirical magazines Vintage and Sword of Damocles. Writings by musician Lou Reed can be found in The Lonely Woman Quarterly. The collection is continuously updated with the latest issues of student publications currently being produced, including OutCrowd, The Student Voice, and Jerk Magazine.
