Historical Note

The South Side Initiative was a project created in 2005 by Syracuse University to facilitate a partnership between the University and the South Side community of Syracuse. The goal was to revitalize the community in the hopes of leading to sustainable economic growth and development, as well as strengthen the relationship Syracuse University has with the surrounding community. Under the guidance of community residents and South Side Initiative's director, Linda Littlejohn, the Southside Community Coalition was created to act as a more centralized entity that partners could more easily connect with.

From these collaborations between the South Side Initiative and various University schools, colleges, and departments, as well as other community partners, different types of programs and opportunities would be offered to South Side residents. These programs were focused on one of five main elements of community revitalization: health and wellness, research, art and culture, education, and technology.

The University Archives does not currently hold enough documentation to verify if and when the South Side Initiative concluded. However, some projects that were developed as part of the South Side Initiative continue to exist as programs run by other organizations. One example is the children's arts education program Kuumba, which is now called the Creative Arts Academy and is currently managed by the Community Folk Art Center and the Say Yes to Education program.
