Biography

David E. Sopher (1923-1984) was a professor of cultural geography at Syracuse University. Born in Shanghai, China, he moved to the United States to pursue his degrees in geography at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1948, his master's degree in 1950, and his PhD in 1954.

Before coming to Syracuse University, Sopher was an instructor at the University of Minnesota, a research associate with the American Geographical Society, an assistant and associate professor at Sacramento State College, and a visiting professor at the University of Chicago. While teaching at Syracuse University, he was also a visiting professor at the University of California and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Sopher's research focused on cultural geography in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and England. He received a Fulbright Fellowship and was a member of the Association for Asian Studies, the Association of American Geographers and the American Geological Society. He was also a member of the editorial board of Syracuse Scholar and the Middle East Dialogue Group. The David E. Sopher Memorial Scholarship is named for him.

Scope and Content Note

The David E. Sopher Papers spans from 1964 to 1984 and includes a variety of materials related to geographical research on India, South Asia, Sri Lanka, and the United States. The collection includes materials related to cultural, religious, and linguistic geography in the form of maps, course materials, published and unpublished writings, and other academic materials.
