Biography

Marjorie C. Smith

Marjorie Carolyn Smith was born in Troy, New York, on February 3, 1903. She came to Syracuse University on July 1, 1935, to take the position of Director of Residence for Women. She was quickly promoted to Assistant Dean of Women in 1936, and she worked under Dean M. Eunice Hilton. In 1945 Smith became an assistant professor of education at Syracuse University while maintaining her position as Assistant Dean of Women. When Dean Hilton decided to focus her work on the College of Home Economics, Smith took over the role of Dean of Women in 1949.

Smith was actively involved outside of the Syracuse University campus as well. She was a member of a dozen regional, state, and national organizations, including the National and the New York State Association of Deans of Women. She served as president of both the Troy and Syracuse Business and Professional Women's Clubs as well as for the Zonta Club of Syracuse. Smith also served on the boards of the Syracuse Red Cross and the Syracuse Y.W.C.A. She was an honorary member of Pi Delta Theta and Eta Pi Upsilon and also a member of the Delta Omega sorority. Her work for the women of New York State was recognized by a citation awarded by Governor Thomas Dewey in 1950.

Smith retired in 1969 after over 30 years of service at Syracuse University. She passed away in 1972.
