Historical Note
Sigma Theta Tau is a nursing honor society founded in 1922 by six nursing students at the Indiana University Training School of Nurses, now the Indiana University School of Nursing. The honorary was created to help promote nursing as a career and support nursing scholarship and research and was the first United States organization to fund nursing research. In 1985, Sigma Theta Tau was incorporated and became Sigma Theta Tau International Inc., a nonprofit organization. Today, the honorary society has over 500 chapters at various higher education institutions and health care partners across North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
In 1959, the Syracuse University School of Nursing established the Omicron Chapter, becoming the 14th school to join the honor society. Later, the chapter became the Sigma Theta Tau Omicron at-Large Chapter, and included the Department of Nursing at Le Moyne College and the College of Nursing at State University of New York Upstate Medical University. Although the School of Nursing at Syracuse University was closed in 2006, the Omicron chapter still exists at the University as the Omicron Alumni Chapter.
Scope and Content Note
The Sigma Theta Tau International Omicron at-Large Collection contains materials related to the formation of the Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International at Syracuse University, its members, special events and programs hosted by the chapter, as well as documents and memorabilia related to the membership induction ceremony. The collection is composed of six series:
Correspondence consists of congratulatory messages sent to the Omicron Chapter, donation requests for the Sigma Theta Tau International 75th Anniversary Campaign, as well as internal and external correspondence regarding the change to Alumni status for the Omicron Chapter at Syracuse University.
Media consists of materials related to the 2009 Induction Ceremony and the 50th Anniversary of Omicron Chapter.
Memorabilia consists of scrapbooks, a wall hanging, and a president's collar. This series also includes ceremonial objects, such as glass candle holders and a ceramic lamp, sometimes called a Nightingale lamp, used as part of the graduation ceremony for nurses.
Photographs includes various photographs of Sigma Theta Tau Omicron Chapter members as well as the Pillar of Knowledge and Orange Grove paver sponsored by the Omicron Chapter.
Printed materials consists of programs, invitations, and newsletters produced by the Omicron Chapter.
Records consists of administrative reports, chapter minutes, and other materials collected by the Omicron Chapter. This includes the original Sigma Theta Tau Omicron Chapter charter, as well as papers related to Omicron Chapter members. This series also contains materials from the Agenda Society, the former nursing honorary society for Syracuse Memorial Hospital and Syracuse University School of Nursing before Syracuse University’s acceptance into Sigma Theta Tau.
