Biography

Nola Sheffer (1938-) graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960. While at the University, she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi and was part of the first group of students that participated in the Semester in Italy Program in fall 1959. She went on to receive a Master of Science degree from Harvard University in 1965.


Scope and Content Note

The Nola Sheffer Papers contain materials from Sheffer’s undergraduate experience at Syracuse University. The collection is divided into three series:

Correspondence includes letters from Diane Harris, Sheffer’s “Big Chum" at Syracuse University who was responsible for writing to Sheffer to offer advice and answer questions about student life before her arrival on campus. The other letters are from Joyce Carol Oates, who lived with Sheffer and others in Walker Cottage, one of the houses for women students owned by the University at the time.

Photographs consists of group pictures of the residents of Walker Cottage during the 1956-1957 academic year and a portrait of Sheffer taken for her sorority composite.

Printed materials include Sheffer's monthly meal tickets for campus dining halls, a menu from the Savoy restaurant on Marshall Street, a clipping from the University yearbook, and an invitation to the 1960 graduation ceremony.
