Historical Note

The Rose, Jules R., and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music is part of the Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts. The School has its roots in the College of Fine Arts, where the first music professor was hired in 1877. In 1945, the College of Fine Arts reorganized into the School of Music, the School of Architecture, and the School of Art. The School of Music became part of the new College of Visual and Performing Arts in 1972. After Jules R. Setnor '32 and Rose Setnor '33 gave a large gift to the School in 1997, it was renamed the Rose, Jules R., and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music.

Scope and Content Note

The Setnor School of Music Recordings contains administrative material, broadcast notes, programs, and audio recordings.

Administrative material contains a few pieces of correspondence, miscellaneous notes, and a number of indexes and lists.

Broadcast notes related to the Crouse Concert series, which broadcast recorded (and occasionally live) performances on local radio stations. There are program listings for each broadcast, many with sound engineer's notes, as well as scripts for spoken portions such as the intro/outro and background information about the artist(s) and/or composition(s).

Programs contains printed programs from performances spanning more than forty years. Most feature Syracuse University School of Music faculty and students and took place on campus, but some are for performances by University-connected individuals at other venues, and by non-University-connected individuals -- guest artists, for example -- at campus venues. The vast majority of the programs are originals, though earlier years contain some photocopies. Many of the programs are annotated with the ID number of the corresponding recording (see next series), and sometimes with additional information from the sound engineer.

The vast majority of the collection consists of Recordings of performances by faculty, students, and visiting performers. These include ensemble performances, concerts, radio broadcasts, rehearsals, student recitals, lectures, special events and more. Many are of student recitals performed in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a degree in music. Recordings are on a range of media, including audiocassette, reel tapes, CDs, DAT tapes, and DVDs. Each item has a unique identifier, although these are not consistent since the guidelines for assigning ID numbers evidently changed over the years. For example, ID numbers beginning with "cc_cd" indicate they are CDs and "cc_dat" indicate DAT tapes. However, later items have ID numbers beginning with "sua_setnor_rec" regardless of format. An itemized list of all recordings with full details, including title, date, type of media, and other information, is available in Excel format.
