Biography

John Sells Pierce (1918-2005) was a Syracuse University alumnus and United States Army veteran. Pierce was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Syracuse, New York as a teenager. He spent one year attending high school abroad at Chillon College in Switzerland before returning to New York and finishing his schooling at Pebble Hill School in DeWitt, New York. Pierce then enrolled as an engineering student in the College of Applied Science at Syracuse University in 1936. While he was a student, Pierce was a member of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), the fraternity Zeta Psi, and the military honor societies Pershing Rifles and Scabbard and Blade. He graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned as a first lieutenant by the Army at the onset of the United States' involvement in World War II. Pierce was posted in the European Theater with the 4th Signal Center Team. After the war, Pierce returned to the United States and moved to Skaneateles, New York. He worked as a manufacturer's representative for various companies across New York state.

Scope and Content Note

The John Sells Pierce Photographs consists of black and white photographs collected by Pierce during his time as a student at Syracuse University. About half of the photographs are from the fall of 1937, when Pierce attended the two-week long Survey Camp program hosted by the College of Applied Science at Sandy Lake, New York near Lake Ontario. The program was a requirement for sophomores and juniors majoring in civil engineering, but it was also open to all others who qualified. Some of the courses offered during the program were general and topographic surveying, hydrographic surveying, and railroad surveying. The photographs from Survey Camp depict Pierce and other students in group pictures and using survey equipment. Most of the other photographs are from the summer of 1939, when Pierce and other ROTC members attended a training camp in Plattsburgh, New York. Most of these photographs show Pierce and other students at the camp's rifle range.
