Historical Note

Pi Mu Epsilon is a math honorary fraternity with the purpose to promote scholarly activity in mathematics among students and staff in academic institutions and staff of qualified non-academic institutions. The founder and Director General of Pi Mu Epsilon, Dr. Edward Drake Roe, Jr. (d. 1929), began the fraternity as a Mathematical Club in 1903 at Syracuse University. During a meeting of the club in 1913, Roe proposed the creation of Pi Mu Epsilon and by 1914, a convention was held and a constitution was adopted. The Mathematical Club was dissolved after its assets were turned over to the new fraternity. A second chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon was established at Ohio State University in 1919, making Pi Mu Epsilon a national fraternity. The Pi Mu Epsilon Journal was established in 1949 with aims to publish quality articles written by students and other affiliated people. As of 2014, the honorary fraternity has 382 chapters, representing 47 states and the District of Columbia. The Syracuse University chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon is still currently active.
