Biography

Otway Pardee (1920-2018) was a professor of mathematics and computer and information science at Syracuse University from 1948 to 1986. Pardee received his B.S. from the University of Washington and served as an ensign in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1948 and started teaching as an associate professor of mathematics at Syracuse University later that year. He was named director of the academic computing center in 1962 and served in that position until 1969. Pardee also served as chair of the committee that created the School of Computer and Information Science in 1966. Pardee was made a full professor of computer and information science in 1969. He also served on the University Senate for more than 20 years and was an active member of the Syracuse University chapter of the American Association of University Professors.

Scope and Content Note

The Otway Pardee Papers contain materials collected and written by Pardee during his time as a professor at Syracuse University. Most of the materials are related to Pardee's supervision of the computing center and the creation of the School of Computer and Information Science, but there are also some documents that reflect Pardee's interest in research conducted by other Syracuse University faculty. The collection is divided into the following series:

Computing center materials consists of papers related to the operation and use of the academic computing center at Syracuse University. For example, this series includes instructional materials for first time users and reports explaining the value of the center.

Faculty writings contains reports and research papers written by Syracuse University faculty members. The majority of these writings pertain to the fields of electrical engineering and mathematics. This series also includes manuscripts and reports written by Pardee himself, most of which are related to computer science.

School of Computer and Information Science materials contains papers related to the creation of the school and its programs. Some of the materials included are course planning documents, minutes from committee meetings, and CVs of potential faculty members.

University publications consists of other reports and event programs that Pardee collected while at Syracuse University.
