Biography

Charles Noble (1898-1968) was Dean of Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University from 1945 to 1967. He received his B.A. in 1921 from Williams College and his Bachelor of Divinity in 1924 from Union Theological Seminary. He held positions at various churches in New York and Connecticut before coming to Syracuse University. As part of his duties, Noble performed Protestant services, counseled students both individually and in groups, established religious policies on behalf of the University, and offered spiritual leadership to the students. In addition to his responsibilities with the University, he was involved in a number of organizations, including the New York State Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the National Advisory Committee on Camping.

Scope and Content Note

The Charles Noble Slides consists of photographic slides taken during Noble's time as Dean of Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University. They include images of the Syracuse University campus and events such as Spring and Colgate weekends as well as social events. The collection contains both film and glass slides, with the film slides in color and the glass slides primarily in black and white.

Many of the social event slides depict either Pinebrook Conference Center or Casowasco Camp and Retreat Center. Pinebrook was a Syracuse University-owned conference center in the Adirondacks that was used as a host site for the Student Leaders Conferences run by the University and as a summer retreat for faculty. Casowasco is a retreat center on Owasco Lake that is owned and operated by the United Methodist Church. Due to the difficulty in determining which unlabeled slides show Pinebrook or Casowasco, these slides may be mixed together.

This collection contains imagery of the Saltine Warrior, a racist caricature of Native Americans that users may find objectionable. The representation contained in this collection was prevalent at the time of its creation although no less harmful and inaccurate than it is today. The collection is preserved and presented for its historic and research value.
