Biography

Lawrence Myers Jr. (1921-) was a professor at Syracuse University from 1946 to 1991 and from 1993 to 2000. Myers started his career in the Radio Department, which was merged with the School of Journalism in 1971 and re-named the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He was a professor at the school, as well as a department chair for the Television and Radio Department from 1963 to 1991. Myers also went on to serve as the Interim Dean of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications from 1989 to 1990. He left his position at Newhouse in 1991, and in 1993 returned as an adjunct professor for the Division of International Programs Abroad (DIPA).

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the personal papers of Lawrence Myers Jr., many of which come from his time as a professor at Syracuse University. The bulk of the collection consists of materials possibly used by Myers as teaching materials in his classes. Types of materials include notes, correspondence, photographs, audio/visual materials, reports, pamphlets, articles, research studies, and memorabilia. Materials in the collection are dated from 1941 to 2008. The collection is arranged in two series, Audiovisual materials and Subject files.

The Audiovisual materials series consists of materials dated from 1941 to 2005. These materials are film reels, CDs, VHS tapes, and cassette tapes. Content of these materials include old commercial reels, and radio programs that may have been used as teaching materials.

The Subject files series consists of materials dated from 1950 to 2008. Types of materials are primarily reports, notes, correspondence, photographs of Myers, research studies, and memorabilia. Content of these materials includes research about radio and television communications. Some of these items may have been used as teaching materials.

Claire Myers, Lawrence Myers Jr.’s daughter, donated this collection to the Syracuse University Archives in 2018.

Processing Information

Materials were rehoused into archival folders. Photographic materials were placed into Mylar sleeves. Materials were then placed in archival boxes.
