Ervin Merrow was the Syracuse University buildings and grounds foreman from 1917 to 1964. He lived on campus in the Gate House of Yates Castle, a 24-room Norman style castle purchased by Syracuse University in 1905. Yates Castle housed the Syracuse University Teacher's College, followed by the School of Journalism, which occupied the building until 1953. The castle was demolished in 1954.
The Ervin Merrow Papers contains a photograph of Ervin Merrow and his four sisters outside of the Yates Castle gate, as well as two clippings about Yates Castle mostly likely from the 1940s.
