Biography

Attilio Mascone (1921-2009) was a Syracuse University alumnus. Mascone worked part time at a local manufacturer and attended Hilyer College (now the University of Hartford) where he received his associate's degree. He joined the Army Reserve Corp then the 106th Infantry in Europe once he completed his training. While serving, he and his unit, the 422nd, were captured by German forces during the Battle of Bulge and were placed in various camps in December 1945. Mascone was placed in the German camp Stalag IX-B and was eventually freed by American forces Easter of 1945. Mascone took time to recuperate from the harsh conditions of his temporary imprisonment but still suffered from malnutrition, residual frostbite effects, intestinal issues, and lack of dental care from his time in the German camp. He entered Syracuse University on the G.I. Bill and studied engineering. Housing was limited on the Syracuse University campus so Mascone was assigned a dormitory in nearby Baldwinsville. He was a part of the Theta Tau Fraternity. Mascone continued to receive medical care during his attendance at Syracuse University and sought recognition from the Department of Veterans' Affairs for the lingering disabilities resulting from being a prisoner of war. He and the rest of his unit that were prisoners of war were awarded Bronze Stars. Mascone graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1948 and became a Mechanical Engineer with the Washington D.C. General Services Administration with a specialization in building escalators and elevators as well as the creation of code standards for them. Mascone worked on DC landmarks such as the FBI building, the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum and assisted in the renovations of several federal buildings to make them adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Attilio Mascone Papers contain a variety of documents and photographs related to Mascone's military service as well as memorabilia and photos from his time at Syracuse University. This collection contains some born-digital content.
