Biography

Frederick Marvin (1923-2017) was a professor of music in the Syracuse University Setnor School of Music beginning in 1968, as well as an accomplished concert pianist and music scholar. Marvin began his concert career when he was 16 years old. Upon debuting in New York City, he received a Carnegie Hall Award for best debut of the season. He spent several years touring the United States before moving to Vienna, Austria and performing concerts throughout Europe and elsewhere overseas. Marvin received international recognition for the rediscovery of Spanish composer Padre Antonio Soler (1729-1783) and Jan Ladislav Dussek (1760-1812) from Bohemia. Marvin was also the recipient of various grants including two Del Amo Foundation grants, three Fulbright Fellowships, and three grants from the United States-Spanish Joint Committee for Cultural and Educational Cooperation for his research on Soler. In addition to his position at Syracuse University where he was named professor emeritus of music, Marvin was also a visiting professor at the Phillips University of Marburg in Marburg, Germany and an accomplished concert pianist. His husband, opera critic Ernst Schuh, acted as Marvin's manager for his concert career. The College of Visual Performing Arts and the Setnor School of Music held a memorial concert for Marvin shortly after his death in September 2017.

Scope and Content Note

The Frederick Marvin Audio Materials, which total 218 reel-to-reel audio tapes, 1 audio cassette, and 22 CDs, consist of two series.

The Marvin recordings series comprises recordings from rehearsals and concerts Marvin performed, primarily concerts at Syracuse University's Crouse-Hinds Theatre, Carnegie Recital Hall in Manhattan, and various venues throughout Europe.

The Other recordings series contains recordings of other musical artists collected by Marvin. Some recordings in these series were, however, arranged by Marvin.
