Biography
William Harrison Mace was born on November 27, 1852 in Lexington, Indiana. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1883, his master’s degree from the University of Indiana in 1888, his doctorate of philosophy from the University of Jena, Germany in 1897 and an honorary law degree from Syracuse University in 1916. Mace was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Mace was well known for his teaching and had extensive experience before he came to Syracuse. Before finishing his degrees, Mace was a principal and a superintendent in Indiana as well as a leader in public schools in Iowa. Among his roles in teaching, Mace served as the chair of history at DePauw University Normal School in Indiana.
Mace joined the faculty at Syracuse University in 1891 when he accepted the position of the William Griffin Chair of History and Political Science. He later became the chair of the History Department for Syracuse University. Over the course of his career, Mace gave lectures and wrote many articles, reviews, textbooks and other history books. Among these are a collection of guides for the University of the State of New York, University Extension Department for use in teaching specialty classes in American history. In 1894, Mace gave a series of lectures at Cambridge University in England in American history.
Mace was more than just a professor; he was regarded as a friend to many Syracuse students. He was known for his involvement in student activities and attended many commencement ceremonies even after he retired in 1916. He contributed greatly to the library by establishing the Mace Fund for books in the historical department and the Lincoln Collection Fund for Abraham Lincoln resources and memoirs. This legacy lives on in the Mace Lincoln Library Fund. He died on August 4, 1938.
Scope and Content Note
The William H. Mace Papers contain many of Mace's academic writings. These include textbooks, articles and other history books. Many of these works have handwritten lecture notes within. All writings are in English, with the exception of Des alteren Pitt Beziehungen zur amerikanischen Revolution, which is in German. The University of the State of New York, University Extension Department folder contains lecture notes on specialized subjects within American history. Though not all of them have been written by Mace, he contributed toward many of them.
