Biography

Donald George Lundgren was born in Manchester, New Hampshire on August 29, 1924. From 1942 to 1946, Lundgren served as a member of the Marine Corps, fighting in the Pacific theater during World War II. In 1949, he graduated with his bachelor's degree from Saint Anselm College (New Hampshire), which was followed quickly by the acquisition of his master's degree in biology from John B. Stetson University (Florida) in 1950. Lundgren was hired by Syracuse University's biology department in 1952, and he consequently received his doctorate in microbiology from the University in 1954. Lundgren specialized in bacteriology and had a special interest in iron oxidizers. He was tenured in 1961 and promoted to the position of full professor in 1965. In 1970, he was named the chair of the Department of Biology, a position he held for many years.

During his time at the University, Lundgren was a member of the University Senate, the Biotechnology Committee, and the Life Safety Committee. He also held a number of professional memberships with organizations such as the American Society of Microbiologists, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Association of University Professors. Lundgren traveled nationally and internationally to discuss his field of study, contributing greatly to the discourse. His travels took him to countries like Germany, Italy, India, and Japan.

Donald Lundgren died on August 15, 1985 in Manlius, New York.


Scope and Content Note

The Donald G. Lundgren Papers consist of materials related to his time as a professor in the Department of Biology at Syracuse University. The collection is divided into seven series:

The Committees and Organizations series contains materials from the various organizations of which Lundgren was a part or with which he worked closely.

The Conferences and Symposia series comprises materials from professional functions that Lundgren attended throughout the course of his career.

The Correspondence series contains letters and memoranda exchanged between Lundgren and colleagues or friends.

The Grants and Proposals series contains proposals for research filed by Lundgren and subsequent grant information.

The Publications series comprises Lundgren's published academic work.

The Research series contains information in relation to the research Lundgren conducted throughout his time at the University.

The Teaching Materials series comprises materials related to the various classes taught by Lundgren.
