Biography

Irene Engle Leverett (1928-2016) and Theodore “Ted” Leverett (1928-2010) were alumni of the class of 1949 at Syracuse University.

After graduating the valedictorian of her high school class in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, Irene Engle attended the College of Fine Arts at Syracuse University, earning her Bachelor’s degree in piano. Illustrating her love for music, she was a member of the University Chorus, the Hendricks Chapel Choir, and Sigma Alpha Iota, a music fraternity. She was a member of the Independent Women’s Association (IWA) and was elected to the IWA sophomore council. Throughout her college career, Irene was a member of the Outing Club and Eta Pi Epsilon, a senior women’s honorary society; chairman of the music committee, the chapel board, and Independence Hall; and a senior guide of student government.

Theodore Leverett was a native of Yonkers, New York. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees (’49, G ’50) in mechanical engineering at Syracuse University at the L. C. Smith College of Engineering (now known as the College of Engineering and Computer Science). He was a member of Pi Tau Sigma, a mechanical engineering honor society; Pi Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honorary; Sigma Pi Sigma, a physics honor society; the Hendricks Chapel board; and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The degrees he earned from Syracuse University provided a foundation for a successful career at IBM.

Irene and Ted met while attending Syracuse University and later married in 1954. Both stayed active within the Syracuse University community as alumni. Ted served as president of the Dutchess County SU Alumni Club, and both he and Irene acted as pre-college counselors for potential students at the University. In recognition of their devotion to and support of Syracuse University throughout their lives, the University granted the request to have Ted and Irene's ashes laid to rest on campus outside of Smith Hall.
