Biography

Antje Bultmann Lemke (1918-2017) was a Professor Emerita of the Syracuse University iSchool. Born in Germany, she earned a degree in library science from the University of Leipzig and used the library to aid people evading Nazi persecution. She was part of the German Resistance and after World War II escaped from Russian-controlled East Germany to West Germany.

After moving to the United States in the 1940s, Lemke worked as an art and music librarian at Syracuse University and earned her master's degree in library science there in 1954. She eventually began teaching classes for the School of Library Science, now the iSchool. Lemke was a violinist in the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra which she helped establish in 1961. She was also dedicated to preserving the work of Albert Schweitzer.

In 1998, Lemke was named a Righteous Gentile by the Temple Society of Concord, recognizing her role in protecting Jewish lives in Nazi Germany and risking her own life. Two rooms on the Syracuse University campus bear her name, the Antje Bultmann Lemke Seminar Room at the Special Collections Research Center in Bird Library and a conference hall in Hinds Hall. Additionally, after her retirement, the iSchool established the Antje Lemke Book Award, an annual graduate scholarship awarded to a Library and Information student with a passion for learning and dedication to service.
