Biography

John D. Kegg (1942-) attended the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) from 1959 to 1963. He was a member of the Kappa Phi Delta social-professional fraternity for ESF students, the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) band, and the entomology club. Additionally, Kegg was a member of the Syracuse University marching band and played the trombone at all eleven games of the Orangemen’s undefeated 1959 football season and first bowl victory in 1960. It was the Syracuse Orangemen’s only national championship season and marked the emergence of Ernie Davis as a star player.

Scope and Content Note

The John D. Kegg Trombone comprises the trombone Kegg played during the 1959 football season and the 1960 Cotton Bowl, its original case, and a reminiscence written by him of his perspective on the season. The trombone and case both show signs of wear. The slide trombone is an aged brass instrument with "Silvertone" etched on the bell. Several manufacturers are associated with Silvertone trombones including H.N. White's King series and Sears, Roebuck, and Co. (Sears), who contracted E.K. Blessing in Elkhart, Indiana, and others to create several types of brass instruments for widespread release. Given the lack of embellishment on the bell and other identifying information, it is likely a Sears Silvertone trombone.
