Biography

James Hunter Jones (1897-1918) was a student at Syracuse University from 1916 to 1917, when he enlisted in the New York State National Guard at the onset of American participation in World War I. He served in the Syracuse division of the 108th Infantry and fought overseas as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. Jones was killed in action in the Battle of the Hindenburg Line on September 29, 1918. His commanding officer described him as "quiet, steady and faithful to duty."

Scope and Content Note

The James Hunter Jones Collection consists of a photographic postcard of Jones and a letter from Harry H. Farmer, Jones' commanding officer, to the Jones family after his death abroad.
