Biography

Margaret R. Johnston graduated from Syracuse University in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. During her time on campus, she was a member of the Honors Council, Association of Women Students, and Projection '70. Johnston was also the president of the Interdorm Council, Eta Pi Upsilon, and the Nottingham Co-op, a housing cooperative for female students approved by the University in 1969. The co-op was housed in Nottingham Cottage, one of the original houses for female students owned by Syracuse University. She and the other women living in the Nottingham Co-op participated in the student strike of 1970, offering their living space to serve as strike headquarters for the first few days of the strike. After graduation, Johnston worked as a writer and editor for Syracuse University professor Sol Gordon in the early 1970s. She later established Southern Tier Women's Health Services, a women's health clinic, in 1981 in Binghamton, New York.

Scope and Content Note

The Margaret R. Johnston Papers contains scrapbooks, correspondence, newsletters, and other materials related to Johnston's experience as a student at Syracuse University and her work with Professor Sol Gordon, notable psychologist and sex educator. The materials related to Johnston's student experience consist of two scrapbooks, photographs, and other printed materials. One of the scrapbooks documents the May 1970 student strike while the other provides a general picture of Johnston's time as a student at the University. Most of the printed materials come from her involvement with the Nottingham Co-op, the student strike, and other volunteer or student government activities. Also included is a sheet of notes about her experience in the student strike written by Johnston in 2021. Some of the materials related to Johnston's work with Gordon are two sex education comic books, a sex education newsletter, and news articles related to the public controversy caused by Gordon's work at Syracuse University.
