Biography

Burges Johnson (1877-1963) was an American author, publisher, and professor of English at Syracuse University. Johnson was born in Rutland, Vermont, and graduated from Amherst College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1899. He was later awarded an honorary Litt.D. by his alma mater in 1924. After graduation, he began working in the journalism and publishing industry until 1915 when he became assistant professor of English at Vassar College. He was then hired at Syracuse University in 1927 as professor of English and Director of Public Relations. In 1937, he left the University and became chairman of the English department at Union College, a position he held until he retired from teaching in 1944. Throughout his publishing and teaching career, Johnson was an author of numerous articles and novels. He advocated for nonsense and parodies in literature and was often critical of the American collegiate education system.
