Biography

Photograph of Hiroshi Higuchi

Hiroshi Higuchi (1947-2010) was a professor of aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University. Higuchi was born and raised in Japan and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tokyo in 1970. He then moved to the United States and received his master's degree and PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 1971 and 1977, respectively. Higuchi worked at the NASA Ames Center as a principal investigator from 1976 to 1981 and at the University of Minnesota as an assistant professor and research associate from 1981 to 1989. In 1989, Higuchi joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University.

While at Syracuse University, Higuchi researched and wrote extensively on the experimental and computational aerodynamics of vehicles, wake interactions behind bluff bodies, the aerodynamics and flow of parachutes, and many other topics in the field of aerospace engineering. He conducted most of his research in partnership with other professors or Syracuse University students. Higuchi also spent time as a visiting professor at the Institute of Fluid Science at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. He used his position to coordinate a formal partnership between the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the Institute, which led to a larger academic agreement between Syracuse University and Tohoku University.

Scope and Content Note

The Hiroshi Higuchi Papers contain various publications, presentations, conference proceedings, and other materials written or acquired by Hiroshi Higuchi. The bulk of the papers are related to his research and publications in various aerospace topics. The collection is divided into the following series:

Audiovisual materials contains CDs, DVDs, and other recordings with research simulations, data, course plans, and other information. The simulations may have been for instruction, as Higuchi was interested in the use of digital technology as a learning aid.

Conference proceedings consists of abstracts, agendas, posters, and proceeding reprints from presentations that Higuchi gave at various aerospace and fluid science conferences. Higuchi frequently collaborated with other researchers, both those from Syracuse University and from other institutions around the world. This series gives insight into the long list of collaborators with whom Higuchi worked.

Personal materials contains biographical materials, certificates, clippings, and other materials related to Higuchi's life outside of his position at Syracuse University. There are also materials related to Higuchi's membership in various professional organizations, specifically the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Presentations consists of transparency sheets, slides, and notes Higuchi used when presenting papers and research at symposiums, lectures, and other gatherings.

Publications includes research papers and drafts by Higuchi and others that were published in scientific journals. Some of the publications are from when Higuchi worked as a visiting professor in Japan, and as such, were published in Japanese.

Research materials contains notebooks, loose notes, photographs, grant proposals, reports, and other materials Higuchi created or collected while conducting research. Most of the grant proposals were submitted to the National Science Foundation and include topics such as the use of virtual simulations in engineering education, improvement of air quality control in enclosed spaces, and a general study into the aerodynamics of parachutes.

Syracuse University materials consists of administrative documents, course exams and problem sets, correspondence, clippings, and other documents related to Higuchi's tenure as a professor at Syracuse University. This series contains correspondence, clippings, and other materials related to the partnership between Syracuse University and Tohoku University, including a photocopy of the doorplate to the former liaison office at Syracuse University. This series also includes papers detailing the College of Engineering and Computer Science's purchase of a MOTUS 622i flight simulator, which allowed students to get piloting experience and to test out the plane designs they made for various classes. The purchase was coordinated by Higuchi and was a much-needed upgrade, as the previous flight simulator no longer reflected modern aircraft technology.
