Biography

Erik Hemmingsen was a professor of mathematics at Syracuse University. Born in Denmark on September 16, 1917, Hemmingsen became a United States citizen when his father was granted citizenship. He received his undergraduate degree from Temple University, his M.S. from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His specialty was topology and he contributed to the publication of Summer Institute on Set Theoretic Topology, University of Wisconsin, 1955; Summary of Lectures and Seminars. Hemmingsen was a member of the American Mathematics Society, Mathematical Association of America and Sigma Xi. During 1972 and 1973, Hemmingsen served as the president of the upstate section of the Mathematical Association of America.

Hemmingsen joined the faculty of Syracuse University in 1947, becoming a full professor in 1963 and served as chairman of the Mathematics Department between 1971 and 1978. He did spend a year teaching at Vanderbilt University, but he quickly returned to continue teaching at Syracuse University. During his time at Syracuse, Hemmingsen served on the board of trustees of Syracuse University Library Associates and wrote a history of his department during his time at Syracuse University. He became the University’s Mace bearer and retired in 1988, becoming professor emeritus. Hemmingsen later died on December 30, 2012.

Scope and Content Note

The Erik Hemmingsen Papers include his articles and a copy of his memories of the Syracuse University Mathematics Department. This extensive memoir describes the different faculty, relations in the department, and the departmental progress between 1947 and 1987.

Hemmingsen's papers also include drafts for the collection of seminars and lectures compiled in Summer Institute on Set Theoretic Topology, University of Wisconsin, 1955. Along with these drafts are correspondence between Hemmingsen and contributors about the editing and publishing process.

Acquisition Information

Materials related to Summer Institute on Set Theoretic Topology, University of Wisconsin, 1955 were received by the Archives in 1962. Hemmingsen gave his personal memoir and writings to the Archives in 1994.
