Biography

Arthur J. Fritz Jr. (1940-) was both a student and long-time staff member at Syracuse University. Fritz attended Syracuse University as an undergraduate student from 1958 to 1962. During that time, he was a member of the fraternity Delta Upsilon, the Goon Squad, and the University Chorus. Fritz was also the chair of both the Liberal Arts Advisory Council and the Winter Carnival during his senior year. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in social sciences and social studies education.

After graduating, Fritz joined the admissions office at Syracuse University as an associate director. He oversaw the Alumni Pre-College Counseling program, which prepared alumni across the country to serve as representatives of Syracuse University in their hometowns and answer questions that local high school students or counsellors may have about the University. In 1965, Fritz married Katryn Tolley, daughter of Chancellor William P. Tolley. Fritz also started attending graduate courses in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the School of Education around this time. He was named Director of Financial Aids in 1968, working first in the admissions office and then the development office after an office reorganization in 1979. Fritz continued working for Syracuse University until 1993, when he accepted a position as Director of Development for the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Fritz was a member of many professional organizations, such as the National Institute for Financial Aid Administration and the Association of College Admissions Counselors, and was a founding member of the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association. He was an advocate for raising the amount of financial aid available to students at the federal and state levels so more students would be able to attend college.
