Historical Note

Engineering courses were first taught at Syracuse University in 1877 in its College of Liberal Arts. To meet increasing demands, Syracuse University established the College of Applied Science in 1901 with generous funding from Lyman Cornelius Smith. The college occupied Lyman C. Smith Hall in 1902 and by 1907 its second building, Machinery Hall. William Kent was the first dean of the College of Applied Science. In 1952, the College of Applied Science restructured into the College of Engineering. To accommodate expanded programs, the College of Engineering was separated out to different buildings such as Hinds Hall and Link Hall. In 1992, the College of Engineering merged with the School of Computer and Information Science to form the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Now the College of Engineering and Computer Science comprises the Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
