Biography

Horace A. Eaton

Horace Ainsworth Eaton (1871-1958) was raised in Quincy, Massachusetts. He graduated from Adams Academy there and received Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees from Harvard University.

From 1901 to 1903 Eaton was a member of the German department at the University of Vermont. He married Emily R. Lovett in 1902. A year later he started teaching at Syracuse University and was chairman of the English department for 25 of the 41 years he spent at Syracuse.

Eaton was an authority on the life and writings of Thomas DeQuincey and published two volumes about him.

Eaton was one of the founders and a leading member of the Syracuse Meeting of Friends. Following his retirement from Syracuse University in 1944 he headed a Friends' international school, known as Eerde, at Ommen, the Netherlands.

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of the Eaton Papers contain his autobiography in handwritten and typewritten formats which Eaton worked on during his final years. The typewritten drafts were done by his elder daughter, Rebecca. The autobiography covers Eaton's life from childhood up to and including his time at Syracuse University. There are detailed accounts of his and his wife's life in Syracuse and the associates they made. Also included in the papers are tributes made to Eaton on and surrounding the occasion of the unveiling of his portait on June 2, 1957 in the Department of English in the Hall of Languages at Syracuse University.
