Biography

Brenda Carmer was born on March 13, 1924. From Caldwell, New Jersey, Carmer received her Liberal Arts degree in Psychology from Syracuse University in 1946 and a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1955. While at Syracuse University, she sang in a trio with Pat Perry and Mary Blanchard at alumnae meetings and women’s club programs. In 1946 Carmer won a contest to perform her song, “A Dream Come True,” at the Syracuse University Junior Prom, which was held in Archbold Gymnasium on March 22. She sang her written song with Pat Perry and Mary Blanchard and was accompanied by Stan Kenton and his orchestra. This song became the prom theme song for 1946.


Scope and Content Note

The Carmer Papers range between 1942 and 1946 and include materials relating to her music and performance at the 1946 Junior Prom. Her correspondence includes Western Union notices of congratulations as well as letters between Carmer and the United States Copyright Office. This collection contains lyrics and sheet music written by Brenda Carmer, including "A Dream Come True" and other songs. Prom materials comprise her seat card, photographs and clippings about the event and her performance. Also included is the Freshman Week Program for 1942, in which Carmer has checked events on the calendar for freshman week.
