Historical Note

The Syracuse University Women's Club of Auburn was an alumni club for women.

The Syracuse University Women's Club of Auburn, New York was founded on January 27, 1912 by ten charter members. The first meeting on January 27, 1912 was held in the house of Mrs. Samuel Day. The club was organized largely through the efforts of Mrs. Charles Wright and Mrs. Grace Kelsey. It was the oldest, continuously active alumni club of Syracuse University. Every year since 1921, the club offered scholarship funds to assist young women in securing an education at Syracuse University. The club had a large presence around Auburn and Syracuse, New York, and even internationally. The last remaining members met and concluded the club in 2009.


Scope and Content Note

The Syracuse University Women's Club of Auburn Records are arranged alphabetically by subject and span the years 1912-2009.

The collection consists of correspondence, memorabilia and meeting minute notebooks. Correspondence includes materials such as letters regarding events, special club business, resignations, and donations for the scholarship fund. The most notable correspondence was received from Chancellor William P. Tolley as well as a letter sent to Chancellor Melvin A. Eggers. Additionally, the collection includes a folder about the club's adoption of a French war orphan named Paulette Monnot from 1918-1920. Various memorabilia include small ribbons, a small 'SU' pin, and an artificial orange flower. Multiple notebooks contain recorded meeting minutes and notes, notes on club activity, and club officer names. Lastly, there are copies of programs and event invitations.
