Historical Note

Photograph of Louise Stewart

The students of the Class of 1916 graduated on June 14, 1916. A. Segur Delling served as class president, Francis Caflisch as vice-president, Esther Brundage as secretary, and J.S. Ellithorp Jr. as treasurer. J.H. Turnure was valedictorian and Margaret Hutchinson was salutatorian.

Scope and Content Note

The Syracuse University Class of 1916 Photographs consists of 421 head and shoulders portraits of the students in caps and gowns. Based on the shape of the photographs themselves, they may have made up one large composite photograph which at some point was cut apart into individual portraits. Each portrait also has a number, and a name index corresponding student name to number is also available in the collection. Because the numbers go up to 599, it is evident that some portraits are missing from the collection.
