Historical Note

The Wall of Remembrance after a Rose Laying Ceremony

The Remembrance Scholarships were established at Syracuse University (SU) in 1989 with the first group of scholars being selected for the 1990-1991 academic year. The Remembrance Scholarships were established in memory of the 35 students enrolled in the Division of International Programs Abroad (DIPA) who were killed in the 21 December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. A scholarship of $5,000 is awarded each year to 35 undergraduate students who are selected after an application and interview process. You may visit the Remembrance Scholars website to learn more about past and present scholars.

The Lockerbie Scholarship program was established in 1989 and the first students were enrolled in the fall of 1990. This program provides two students from Lockerbie, Scotland the chance to study for one year at Syracuse University. These scholarships are jointly funded by Syracuse University and the Lockerbie Trust. The Lockerbie Scholarships were established in memory of the 11 victims who died in Lockerbie, Scotland, as a result of the crash that ensued from the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. You may visit the Lockerbie Scholars website to learn more about the program.

Through the Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholarships, the selected students exchange ideas and educate themselves and the campus community about the devastating effects of terrorism through various Remembrance activities. Initially, Remembrance activities were spread throughout the academic year. As of 1996, most Remembrance activities occur during Remembrance Week during the fall semester. The Scholars' mission is to honor and remember all 270 lives lost in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, especially the 35 Syracuse University study abroad students, through "Looking Back and Acting Forward" in all that they do. They connect Syracuse University's experience of Pan Am Flight 103 to more current events by holding activities that focus on awareness and education about terrorism, Islamophobia, and other related topics, and by helping the Syracuse community through service projects.
