Jane Maxwell was a radiographer (x-ray technician) with the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in 1988, and volunteered to serve as a member of the forensic radiography team in the aftermath of the Lockerbie bombing. Jane, along with her colleagues, worked under ad hoc conditions for nearly three weeks in order to facilitate postmortem examinations of the victims for investigative and identification purposes. Her husband, Roland Maxwell, was a local firefighter and was involved in the recovery process. Following the Air Disaster, Jane joined the Northern and Yorkshire Region Forensic Team, part of a new system implemented to ensure medical and emergency personnel from the area nearest a disaster of this kind are not solely responsible for recovery and forensic duties.
The Jane Maxwell Papers contains two items related to her experience as a radiographer participating in the aftermath of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. These items include a written account of her experiences, and a scarf presented to her by the Lockerbie Council in thanks for her service. She has also recorded an oral history, which is available on through the Pan Am 103 Story Archives Collection.
