Historical Note

Photograph of Police Scotland Headquarters

The first police force for the Dumfries and Galloway region was established in 1788 as the Royal Burgh of Dumfries Police. In 1838 the County of Dumfries Police was formed, followed closely by other local law enforcement agencies, which, in 1948, combined to form the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary was the smallest police force in mainland Britain. Nonetheless, it is credited with the design of the Scottish Police badge (1926), and the checkered design featured on Scottish police hats. Dumfries and Galloway was the police force responsible for the investigation into the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

Dumfries and Galloway became District V of Police Scotland on April 1, 2013, and is now the second largest force in the United Kingdom after the Metropolitan Police in London, England.
