Biography

Joan Deppa (1939-2021) was a journalist, author, and professor of journalism and communication at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She was born in Lansing, Michigan, and received both her undergraduate degree and Ph.D. in journalism at Michigan State University. At the start of her career, she worked as a newspaper and wire services journalist for 16 years, seven of which were spent in Europe with the United Press International. After her return to the United States her career shifted to teaching, first at Virginia Commonwealth University and then later at Syracuse University, where she taught for 31 years until her retirement in 2015. During her time at Syracuse, she helped establish Newhouse's first computer lab.

Deppa was a co-author of The Media and Disasters: Pan Am 103 in which she and fellow communications professors Maria Russell, Dona Hayes, and Elizabeth Lynne Flocke examined the effects that the media coverage of the tragedy had on the community.
