Biographical History

Onondaga Pottery Company was founded in 1871 in the town of Geddes, New York. In the late 1880s the company began producing vitreous china, and in 1895 it began stamping its ware "Syracuse China." The durable and beautiful dinnerware was popular with hotels, restaurants, and railroad dining cars. In 1966 the company formally changed its name to Syracuse China. The company remained family-owned until 1971, following which it passed through several corporate owners and mergers. The company was known for its innovations, including the development of chip-resistant china (1896), having the first in-house lithographic shop (1896), and the first fully computer-controlled tunnel kiln (1990s). In 2009, owner Libbey Inc. moved all production out of the United States and the manufacturing facilities and corporate headquarters Syracuse were permanently closed. [Taken in part from "Syracuse China History" article at Syracuse Then and Now.]

Nothing is known for certain regarding Fred Walklett. However, the 1920 U.S. Census lists a Fred C. Walklett in Onondago [sic] County, born in England in 1863, and there was a Fred Walklett who created designs for Royal Doulton and other china lines in England.
