Biographical History

World War II (1939-1945) was the second global conflict of the 20th century. It is generally considered to have begun in September of 1939 with Germany's invasion of Poland and the primary motivation behind it was Germany's determination to expand across Europe. On one side were the Allies (at first France, Poland, Britain and her Commonwealth, Australia, New Zealand and Canada; later joined by the United States, Russia and China) and on the other the Axis (primarily Germany, Italy and Japan). The war ended in Europe on 8 May 1945 (V-E Day) and in Asia three months later, on 15 August 1945 (V-J Day), shortly after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The World War II Collection consists of printed material, including apostcard with a photograph of Hitler in a crowd; written on the back in an unknown hand is a quote from him about brutality.

Also in the collection are a 100-page booklet on the German persecution of Jews ("The Jews in Nazi Germany", 1933); a V-E Day issue of a military newsletter from 8 May 1945, and a report on German defense near Normandy, printed by the U.S. Army XIX Corps and dated 13 August 1944.
