Biographical History

The Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, arose in the 17th century in England and shortly thereafter could also be found in the American colonies. Sir William Penn was a Quaker and many Quakers settled in the province granted to him by King Charles II in 1681, today known as Pennsylvania. Theological beliefs vary widely, but most Quakers espouse nonviolence and tolerance, and some in North America and England became well known for their involvement in the abolition of slavery.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Society of Friends (Syracuse, N.Y.) Housing Project Report consists of a report on a housing project undertaken by the Housing Committee of the Society of Friends in Syracuse, New York in the 1950s, as an experiment in community service. The project included promoting integrated housing, encouraging the city to provide affordable housing for the poor, and a pilot project.
