Biographical History

Henry Martin Formhals (1908-1981) was an American cartoonist. Beginning in 1935, he served as assistant on Merrill Blosser's newspaper comic strip Freckles and His Friends. Formhals' name officially appeared on the strip in the mid 1960s (March 21, 1966), and he continued to work on it until the end of its run in 1971. Over the course of his career, Formhals also worked on the Joe Jinks strip (1946-1953) and assisted on Charlie Plumb's Ella Cinders.


Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Henry Formhals Cartoons collection contains original daily (1966-1967) and Sunday (1967-1968) cartoons from the newspaper comic strip Freckles and His Friends. Sunday versions of the strip include the companion title Hector. Daily cartoon: blue pencil, traces of graphite, brush, pen and ink on illustration board, approx. 6 x 17 ΒΌ in. Sunday cartoon: blue pencil, traces of graphite, brush, pen and ink on illustration board, approx. 19 x 26 in.


Arrangement of the Collection

Daily and Sunday strips are housed separately in chronological order.
