Biographical History

Nelson K. Hopkins was New York State Comptroller and Commissioner of the Canal Fund from 1872 to 1875.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection consists of two letters concerning canal issues. The first, dated 3 Nov 1843, is from James Earll, Jr. in Syracuse to S. Sidney Bruse in Scanandoa and concerns the diversion of the waters of the Scanandoa creek. The other, dated 11 Mar 1874, is from Carroll E. Smith in Syracuse to Nelson K. Hopkins, also of Syracuse, and concerns a potential conflict of interest posed by Senator Word being coadjutor of the "Canal Ring."
