Biographical History
The Prisoners' Relief Committee was organized in the early 1920s to aid "victims of political, civil rights and labor frame-ups, as well as their families." The newsletter states that the committee sought to fight for paroles, pardons, amnesty, Jim Crow conditions in jails, the status of 'political prisoners,' and more. The Prisoners' Relief Committee, which became the Political Prisoners' Relief Committee in the summer on 1953, was a part of the New York City branch of the Civil Rights Congress (CRC). These newsletters share the writings of prisoners as well as ways to help them and keep the public updated on current issues.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Prisoners' Relief Newsletters consist of 14 newsletters issued by the Prisoners' Relief Committee in New York City from 1952 until 1954. Some of the prisoners mentioned in or wrote to the newsletter include Rosa Lee Ingram, Clarence Hill, Bennie Daniels, Wesley Robert Wells, Theodore Jordan, Jr., L. C. Akens, Benjamin J. Davis, and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn.
