Biographical History

The Millerites were followers of the teachings of William Miller who (among other teachings) prophesied that the Second Coming of Jesus Christ would take place in 1843. The Millerites were one of many religious revivals and movements which arose in Western and Central New York in the latter half of the 19th century, giving rise to the nickname "The Burned-Over District."

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Millerites Collection consists of personal letters from residents of Central New York to family members elsewhere, which include discussion of Millerites and the Millerite movement.

The letters from Lucy Ann and J. W. Bates includes the line, "The folks in Albany are all getting religion and preparing for the end of all things in April next but I tell them Oh Shit Miller has made a small mistake of a thousand years only but small as it seems it is a mistake notwithstanding." while the letter from Fanny Flim to her brother and sister-in-law George and Olive discusses "the Millerites or rather Frenchites [who] held a second advent camp meeting on Esqr Westons grove..." and mentions noted Episcopal bishop Philander Chase.
